If they raised the gasoline tax to levels comparable to other civilized countries people would buy 4 cylinder sedans instead of 5,000 pound SUVs and the nation's oil import bill would drop meaningfully. Does the American housewife REALLY need a 5,000 pound truck that gets maybe 11 miles/gallon to go to the grocery store and pick up her daughter at ballet class? You just don't see SUVs and motor homes on the roads in Europe where gas costs the equivalent of $6 to $8/gallon and people get along just fine...in their 4 cylinder sedans, many of which are high-mileage diesels. When they go on vacation, they don't take a house (motorhome) with them. They stay at a hotel or a B&B or camp. But of course no politician seeking reelection would suggest anything like that!!

It is one answer, but having lived in upstate NY, better groundwater protection is needed. Damned expensive to dig a well only to have it poisened.

Well, the speech and the fact that the economics of fueling diesel fleets on nat gas instead of distillate have become overwhelming with the almost simultaneous rise in oil and decline in nat gas over the last 2 years. Given the budgetary issues facing most, if not all local government entities I can well imagine transportation managers having these guys on the speed dial.

is it any wonder he is now re-committing to alt energy, considering all the political investment he has made. Now he will be spending OUR money to buy these very expensive vehicles that nobody else wants for his federal fleet. waste upon waste equals federal perfection
