Bill Gates would have the authority, the competence, and reputation to keep BRK subsidiaries' managers in line.

This is not inconceivable because Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will become the largest BRK shareholder. So it's very much in Gates' interest that BRK stays strong until at least the Foundation liquidated all its stakes (which may decades to complete).

Bill Gates has less than a spotty record picking winning stocks. As for overseeing management I'll call Steve Balmer exhibit one.
