$5 is a small fraction of what popular console games sell for. But traditional developers such as EA, ATVI, and TTWO are finding it's more than what many mobile gamers are willing to pay (up-front, at least), as they increasingly opt for free titles monetized via in-app purchases. Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, a $5 title, had fallen to #25 on the iPhone app chart, and #52 on the iPad app chart, as of Christmas. This has led the game to be out-grossed by low-budget titles such as Candy Crush Saga and My Little Pony. (previous)
