Market recap: Stocks recovered nearly all their early losses following news Congress will reconvene Sunday evening to resume fiscal cliff talks and conflicting reports Pres. Obama may have offered a new proposal to Republicans. But the budget uncertainty is weighing on consumer confidence, which sank to its lowest level since August. Other data on new home sales and jobless claims were more upbeat.

  • i will be stunned, will even go as far as to say there is no way that both sides allow the Fica rate to go back to normal at this time(forget for a moment that reducing employee rate was a good thing,i don't think it was)
No way these morons allow child tax credit to get cut in half along with dependent care credit. No way.
I expect some type of kick the can down the manhole short term agreement that will not allow the above to happen. Some other things thrown in there. Expect every news outlet to over hype this meaningless agreement and either monday or wednesday the S&P pops 20pts Dow 250 at least.
I will check back no later than Jan 2nd after the close to see if i am a moron or not. They will paint this as Obama the great communicator, blah blah blah. You watch. And putting my money where my big mouth is

  • That's how I read this too. Boehner had to convene the House to show that he is concerned and working on it, and blah-blah... Obama has not indicated that he is willing to keep the tax cuts for the rich, and the Republicans have clearly indicated that they won't vote for any tax increases. So, what's the point of getting together on Sunday other than demonstrate some concern, .

  • maybe you are trying to rationalize the irrational?

I want to see the democrats explain how the evil republicans let tax credits for the middle class and lower get cut in half. Tax credits that George W Bush doubled.

Seems to me the markets are looking for anything to go higher. At least in the short run

  • Nice, grinding your axe on Congress for the market gyration today. I'd say specialists were buying cheap all day from eoy tax sellers, then pumped up the price at the close for the end of quarter window-dressers. Nice day for market makers.

  • feels like something is going to break very soon (think of a lamp falling off the shelf). the ever optimistic DOW wants to go up, but down 100 should actually be down 500 when people understand the chain reaction related to this cliff...

they can't see the forest from the trees
