The U.S. Interior Department says it will review oil and gas exploration in Alaska’s Arctic waters after the grounding of the Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A) drilling rig and other equipment mishaps. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says the high-level assessment of drilling will be completed in 60 days. It's not yet clear how the review might affect Shell’s 2013 plans in the region.

  • This rig was in tow when the lines separated. Does this mean we plan to review every barge and ocean going vessel operating in the arctic? This rig was not set in place and operating as a drill rig. It was merely a towed device. What does the DOI actually have to review?

  • Does the federal government really have money to review what it has already reviewed, arctic drilling? A transportation event is not an oil drilling event. Calm heads need to prevail.

  • Unfortunately ideology seems to trump calm headed management.
