While Qualcomm, Nvidia, and Intel unveil new quad-core mobile parts, Samsung (SSNLF.PK) is announcing the Exynos 5 Octa, which technically qualifies as the first 8-core mobile processor. Relying on ARM's (ARMH) big.LITTLE architecture, the Octa pairs 4 high-speed CPU cores with 4 low-power cores that handle background tasks. Though fully harnessing an 8-core chip will require developer legwork, Samsung promises unmatched performance and battery life. The chip should go into plenty of Samsung devices, but other OEMs might not be crazy about buying from a rival.

  • The fully harnessing comment is not really true. The Arm software switcher makes it look like a quad core to the O/S. The O/S could be optimized to do this itself (and ultimately to use cores from both quads at once) but that's not required.
