Unless VIN numbers are considered proprietary information, anyone could check them, so why is this a big deal? And why did the author state "if...the automaker can be trusted?"

More hysterical attempts to cause financial fear among would be investors when there are people out there driving them every day.

I'm not really informed when it comes to VIN numbers in the states, if they create 100 working vehicles but they aren't sold to the public but used for show, and tests etc... do they get VIN numbers?

Tesla does not issue VIN numbers sequentially as cars are produced and delivered, so VINs are not an accurate measure of production volume. The author could have figured this out if he had done his homework and spent a few minutes on the Tesla Motors Club web site. Yet another example of dreadful journalism.

No need to be that harsh. Yes the numbers are a bit inaccurate, but given the info on teslamotorsclub.com it seems as most of the VINS below 3000 has been delivered. Lets say 10% have not been manufactured. This would indicate just shy of 3000 cars produced. Or if as much as 20% of the VINs have not been delivered, they would be just shy of their revised production goal.

The most important thing though is their current production rate. I do not care if they made 100 cars a week in september, as long as they`re making more than 400 a week now!

I took delivery of my Model S on the 23rd of December (it was ready several days earlier), and its VIN ends in 2746, so it would seem fairly certain that the last car delivered in 2012 would have had a VIN of between 3,000 and 3,146. When I picked up the car, I was told that they were producing over 400 cars per week.

I don't know how well the company is doing but I know the stock is doing great. It took 3 days to find 100 shares for sale.

If you look at deliveries in the last week of December, there were far more VIN's reported in the 2000's than in the 3000's. And taking into account gaps after US Sig's and Can Sig's, I estimate about 2800 cars delivered in 2012.

As mentioned previously, what they produced in the 4th quarter is really old news. The bigger questions are; (1) what is their current rate of production, (2) how many current reservations do they have, (3) what is the daily reservation rate and projections for total reservations in 2013, and most importantly--can they hit their goal of 20,000 cars sold in 2013

With the exception of Canadian cars (2000-2xxx) and around 50 cars in the 12xx range, actually they *are* manufactured in VIN sequence (learned from the very message board you referenced). The result is that the difference between the last VIN and the number of cars produced is not material, when compared to 2700.

Who cares about such unimportant VIN "noise"? (Full disclosure, I have just configured my Model S Performance(red), and am a shareholder in the company, and will be buying another 1000 shares or more within the next week or two.)
Everything about this company, it's products, and more importantly it's planned products make this stock the one to buy if there ever was one. The Models S and X are just previews of the main event which will be the assembly of mass production, affordable electric transportation. There is a VAST market for energy efficient vehicles, and Tesla is firmly in the lead.(in my opinion)
