"If Nvidia’s goal with Project Shield is to sell a boatload of handhelds in short order, chances are it’s a doomed enterprise," writes Time's Jared Newman. But if its goal is to kickstart a controller-based Android gaming market, then he thinks the effort could pay off. With Apple committed to its A-series parts, Nvidia (NVDA) has little chance of getting a Tegra chip inside an iPhone or iPad. Thus the future of Nvidia's mobile business is strongly tied to Android, and it has a big incentive to stoke demand for Android apps that need, say, a processor with 72 GPU cores.

  • Being as inexperienced as they are, I'm not sure why Nvidia thinks they can beat Valve and Microsoft at this game.

It's interesting how everybody is doing the same thing.

Valve is releasing the Steam marketplace and Linux powered consoles.

Microsoft tablets and Win8 support Xbox controllers, and the Xbox can be controlled through Surface already. With the new Xbox and Kinect coming this year it's important they have a story that brings together Xbox, Kinect, Surface, Skydrive cloud, Skype, and the app marketplace together as a whole.

  • Tegra is also in WIndows RT. A resurgence in sales could prove a boon too.
