With 1.2B consumers, a rising middle class and a market that could be worth $80B by 2021, India is exceptionally enticing for foreign retailers. However, in addition to fierce local opposition, the likes of Wal-Mart (WMT) face massive obstacles such as an entrenched system of middlemen and dilapidated infrastructure, which causes $10B of the country's produce to spoil each year.

  • Excellent article. Clearly, WMT has an uphill battle given the huge supply chain issues they're facing in India. It'll be interesting to see how WMT copes in the coming years as they work this market.

  • Sad for the people of India. However, if China could do it's magic the last 40 or so years, there is always hope for India.

  • Would be interesting to read articles taking different positions on whether or not India will ever "take-off." I fall into the camp that says they will not be another China but it would sure be nice to be wrong.

  • India won't take off until govt corruption ends. Or at least the corruption changes to where it benefits progress such as in China.

  • China is corrupt but India is the gold medalist in corruption. The Chinese at least have a sort of "team effort" attitude.

The Indian's motto is "everyman for himself"!!
