Thursday, January 17, 4:13 AM ETAT&T (T) is reportedly considering acquiring a European telecom operator and is casting its eye on Holland's KPN, which is 28%-owned by American Movil (AMX), and the U.K.'s Everything Everywhere, which is co-owned by France Telecom (FTE) and Deutsche Telekom (DTEGF.PK). With share prices depressed because of the economic slump, AT&T reckons it might be worth buying into Europe before the data market matures to the level of the U.S.

Most boardroom and the high priced operatives then sent abroad were often insular, provincial and possessed that unique quality of American hubris to rub many other nations and nationals the wrong way. Put I suppose more succinctly, many large oversea investments didn't have 'Coca-Cola staff' to send and establish a beachhead which would reflect both responsibility and respect to the host nation and the intended customer base.
Another problem...back in the 70's and early 80's many large US companies "diversified" overseas because it was the next "hot" marketing thing to do. But they had no viable plan or goal for market penatratuion and development. Hopefully, an entree into the Euro-centric market KPN ultimately makes more sense than I see it at present. Holland, a zero growth nation - even in good times - with no former colonial 'currency' to hitch onto like FTE or TEF (Africa, Brazil, and other South America nations). I just don't see the profitable rational.
Sounds like its deja vu all over again...
