I was suggesting that Apple do the same to capitalize on the huge market out there for peripheral devices, to help the hackers develop new open source hardware solutions:

"The 3D-printing Development Kit, or 3DK, offers 3D templates, case specs, recommended materials and best practices for coming up with custom cases for the Windows Phone 8 handset. "
It's very different than CAD blueprints.
With CAD blue prints someone design engineer still needs to program the CNC or whatever other kind of controller is used to manufacture the widget (by 'cutting'.)
From Wikipedia
"Additive manufacturing or 3D printing[1] is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital model. 3D printing is achieved using additive processes, where an object is created by laying down successive layers of material.[2] 3D printing is considered distinct from traditional machining techniques (subtractive processes) which mostly rely on the removal of material by methods such as cutting and drilling." http://bit.ly/JR6mZj
So essentially, someone like OtterBox could use the SDK to quickly create cases for the Windows Phones..
As Tricky points out, probably not a lot of money in it, but Nokia is an innovative machine! And who knows, I assume this same SDK can be used to create virtually anything that lends itself to this type of manufacturing .. the cases were/are probably just 'samples'.
Disclaimer: The above is mostly speculation on my part.

I am just so stoked about this... :)
“In the future, I envision wildly more modular and customizable phones,” Kneeland says. “Perhaps in addition to our own beautifully designed phones, we could sell some kind of phone template, and entrepreneurs the world over could build a local business on building phones precisely tailored to the needs of his or her local community.”

All in all, great move from Nokia, in the short term a lot of good publicity for Nokia. I can not wait to see how this plays out in the long term.
