Algerian troops have stormed the gas plant in the Sahara desert that had been taken over by Islamist terrorists, killing all the militants. However, while 792 hostages survived, 23 were killed during the four-day siege. The terrorists' capturing of the facility, which is operated by Statoil (STO), BP and Algeria's state oil company, highlights the vulnerability of the operations of multinational energy firms in the Sahara.

  • Poor lame duck SecDef Leon Panetta abroad, having to mouth meaningless platitudes about how the US might respond to these events at some undetermined time in the future. If only the foreign press had followed Dear Leader's "hear no evil, see no evil" example of silence and indifference to this major terror incident.

Back to children reading letters on youtube, comrades. Ignorance is Strength. Forward!

  • In a follow-up to the story, Reuters is reporting that "President Obama promised on Sunday to 'put his boot on the neck of BP' for their role in this 'Algerian Nightmare.' He promised Executive Orders requiring a nationwide database to share healthcare information on all U.S. BP employees and to ask his Energy Tsar to order the immediate emplacement of signs designating all U.S. refineries as 'Gun-free zones.'"

  • So what is worse, the Algerian way where many innocent lives are lost but sending a message to the terrorists that "We don't play Appeasement"?

Or, the Obama way (Benghazi) where heroes are lost AND sending a message of incompetence, indifference, weakness, cowardice and appeasement?

  • Thank God you and me did't have any relatives over there then. That's a lot of dead hostages for being a good job. (Not that the situation could have warranted a different result though).

  • More like 9/11. Are you kidding me. 700 could have been dead. More like 4-5k dead american citizens for dealing with terrorists with leniency on 9/11.

  • Lets hope they got the main guy as part of the assault. My understanding is that he was one of the two main leaders of these groups in Northern Africa. If the French can get the other one then there might be a period of relative calm while they reorganize.

Not too many people realize that in Algeria the Islamic extremist party actually won elections in the 1990's. The secular army prevented them from taking over. Their prisons are overflowing with party members and there are literally 100's of thousands of true believers in Algeria. Its not a situation that will change anytime soon.

I looked over their website and can't find that article. Could you provide a link to it? Thanks.
