  • This is a beat and raise quarter! Although, their sales are still pretty flat. Their free cash flow and margins are impressive! $200?

  • I have recently inherited IBM stock. Seems like it's a nice little retirement package, but my estate planner is urging I sell. "It's been up, it's a good time to sell it." It seems like it's the only thing making any money these days (quarterly dividends) and/or holding value. I think he'd rather I stick in my mutual funds IRA (through him, of course) . I'm 63, self-employed, and thinking of an international living adventure in a couple years. Never been into the market...risk is, well...risky. I'm thinking sit tight till then. Any advice?

  • Trebora,
IBM became an expert in it-advice to companies.
    Companies completely rely on it-advice.
Experts charge heavily and will do so ever more in the near future.
SAP and IBM are safe bets for this near future.

  • @filipo: Until their services are no longer cost effective (expensive, relative to advantages). Then the lower cost leaders will fill the gap. This may drive IBM's revenue and margins down.

  • One thing to consider is that Buffett became the biggest shareholder in IBM about a year ago. So the Oracle of Omaha must be expecting some long term performance from IBM. He can be wrong, of course, but he rarely is.

  • White,
Yes, but until then they'll have the advantage. Cloud computing is still in the take-off phase.
The same happened with ERP-software implementing. At the start it offered great opportunities, but after a few years competitors came and the margins narrowed.
That's why I said "in the NEAR future".

  • IBM is behind the cloud computing curve. Google and Amazon (and perhaps other entrants) will lead that charge.
