felt that this device would follow the path of laparoscopy. I performed the first laparoscopy in SW Florida in 1973. I attended many additional post graduate courses to improve my skills and to increase the types of procedures that could be performed through "band-aid surgery". I suspected that the robotic surgical techniques would grow geometrically as well.
I do not believe that the surface has been scratched when it comes to the growth of use of this device.
I anticipate that short covering will take place for a day or two and that the market will quiet down.
I reviewed the Citron report. Four thousand plus incidents were mentioned, but the number of significant complications were much less. I can not say whether the bad outcomes were related to the skills of the surgeon or from malfunction of the device.
In most laparoscopic incidents, the error is technical and not the result of failure of the device. The burns of adjacent tissues is a recognized complication of any operation, including open surgery.(The old fashioned way).
I wold venture to say that if one reviewed the cases of complications, you would find that those surgeons who got into frequent trouble have their own history regardless of the procedures they use.
This device has a great future.
