Logitech (LOGI +6.5%) says it will take a $211M write-down for its videoconferencing business, which has made $440M worth of acquisitions in recent years. Logitech notes the enterprise videoconferencing market "has experienced a slowdown in recent quarters" - Polycom and Cisco can vouch for that. Not mentioned are the competitive threats posed by cloud-based and network-based solutions. Shares are nonetheless up strongly; was a bigger write-down expected?

  • Not to worry. The future of videoconferencing is bright. Rumors are that our President, in order to save taxpayer dollars, will no longer fly back and forth from Hawaii to attend to business. In the future, he'll teleconference. Indeed, he was the first President to sign a bill by "robo-signature." (Anyone remember the angst over the "robosignings" of the mortgage companies?)

Additionally, important members of the Davo elite have decided to conduct their future get-togethers by teleconference thus doing their part to save the planet.

Now, if LOGI could just come up with a transporter device like they had in "Star Trek," then they would really be cookin'.
