RIM (RIMM +4.3%) has shot higher after Lenovo (LNVGY.PK) CFO Wong Dai suggests his company is open to buying RIM. "We are looking at all opportunities -- RIM and many others" spoke Dai at Davos, while noting RIM's run-up makes a deal more expensive. The comments come shortly after Thorsten Heins mentioned the possibility of selling RIM's hardware ops, something a Canadian government official didn't sound enthusiastic about. Lenovo's smartphone sales have surged lately.

  • Even though he's trying to play the "RIM's run-up makes the deal more expensive" card- he can't stop the rumors from hyping up the stock and launching it much higher, making the deal even more "expensive" for any buyer.

  • the time to buy RIM was five months ago plus RIM won't be acquired by a Chinese company US and CDN Govt. won't allow it

  • Like the US governments didn't allow IBM to divest to Lenovo or what?

  • Agree. And it is ironic to think that (RIMM)'s survival is partly due to its security. So that security is going in the hands of the Chinese?

  • RIM's software is too valuable to fall into foreign hands, or so the Canadian Prime Minister would have believe.

Don't get caught short on this stock

  • I herd today from some Pro Apple Analyst that the Canadian government would never allow a deal go through with a company from China.

This is wrong, maybe true in our resource sector. The Canadian government has contracts already with Chinese companies for mobile wireless towers and mobile technology in Canada.

  • News: people that own RIMM wont let it go for under 30. I don't care where current quote is.

  • I agree with some of the comments here. I can't see a Chinese company being allowed to buy RIMM with all of the recent concerns of Chinese companies and security issues.

  • It now sounds more along the lines of a potential deal to license the software
