Power indicates that consumers are shifting their buying preferences to picking vehicles with the right technology features and cozy interior design over reliability and safety ratings. One industry insider estimates a shift to leather-wrapped interiors and ambient lighting can add six to eight percentage points to profit margins if executed right.

That and, perhaps folks are becoming more comfortable with the thought of bringing the car in on extended warranty with complaints more related to non-threatening things, like an odd noise or funny smell, or a button that doesn't seem to work, as opposed to a major mechanical problem like blown head gasket, or transmission oil leak, or seized piston. They are OK with getting a free oil change and full vehicle inspection while the squeaky door gets lubed.
So now they are looking for comfort and conveniences, and cool advanced technologies, because the basic mechanicals are all pretty sound, and people today are really getting into the technologies with smart phones and tablets, and touch screens and voice operations and such. They like the comforts of the "home (and/or office) on the road" feel that cars can present these days.
