The sinking of an offshore platform at Iran’s South Pars gas field shows the squeeze of sanctions on the country’s energy extraction industry. Development of South Pars, estimated to hold ~14T cu. ft. of natural gas, has been hampered by the withdrawal of Western companies. Iran’s crude exports have been cut nearly in half, but a December bounce sent exports to their highest level in six months.
