"Apple absolutely has to make an iPhone with a bigger screen," iPhone 5 owner Henry Blodget...

  • Friday, February 1, 2:08 PM ET
"Apple absolutely has to make an iPhone with a bigger screen," iPhone 5 owner Henry Blodget declares. While Apple (AAPL +0.1%) insists on using relatively small display sizes to guarantee effective one-handed iPhone use, devices such as Samsung's Galaxy S III (4.8" display) make the iPhone 5 look "puny and sad in comparison."  The iPhone 5's display size doesn't seem to be affecting its U.S. position much, as Strategy Analytics' numbers demonstrate, but international markets appear to be a different story.

  • Keep saying it myself. I have a Dell Streak 5 and once you have had a large screen there is no way in hell you would want a 4 incher. Remember, most people (outside the USA) use their smartphones for reading ebooks, surfing the internet or watching video. All these things are better served on a larger screen.

Come on Apple. How difficult can it be for you?

  • is that a phablet in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

unless you're a man with a satchel, you have limited space to store things when you go out. wallet, keys, smartphone. your phone shouldn't be 1/4 the size of your thigh. if i wanted to watch a movie, i'd stay at home and watch it on my flatscreen 32'' HDTV, not some cumbersome 7'' phone.

  • Personally I agree, there is no point in watching movies or tv shows on your phone. get a laptop, tablet, or pc for that.

but i also agree with Blodget... the screen size is really the only positive feature that Samsung devices have over iPhones (besides NFC). I'd like to see apply offer two varieties of devices for the iPhone5S, one with a large screen and one the standard one-hand operable size. How hard can that be apple? Even though i would never buy it i'm sure there are millions out there who would.

  • I use my iPhone 4 for shooting video and photography. There is a huge community around iPhonography. As a camera it is a great size and you get excellent results. People have shot professional quality commercials and movies on iPhone 4. The fact that iPhones have superior cameras and optics to other phones were a huge selling point. iPhones are certainly replacing the point and shoot, but what if they could replace DSLR cameras and video that be operated with one hand?

I also use my phone as a radio and work out to pandora. I certainly do not want anything larger.i watch movies on my iPad or my MacBook Air. I am not fond of e-readers. I prefer real books as an escape from the world of screens.

  • Cash,
In the US, the guys that carry purses, hipsacks, or satchels are the ones that get their pictures put on the internet and get made fun off.

Its not a "cool" think to do. Its akin to wearing a guy wearing a speedo to the pool or the beach in the US.

  • Buying decisions aren't explained by logic but psychology. Especially in countries where the devices are not subsidized, a larger phone is understandably more attractive to many.

Think about it for a minute. If you're paying $200 regardless of size, it may not be a big issue. But if the larger phone is less expensive (albeit just slightly, the SG3 is $600) too, that is going to not sit well with a lot of people on a gut level.

if the devices are not subsidized, the feeling for many is you're getting less device for more money by buying an iPhone. This may explain why according to the article, larger devices are more popular outside the u.s. If SUVs/big cars cost the same as smaller cars and used the same gas, small car sales would go down and SUV sales would go up. some would still prefer the small cars, but it's obvious that a lot would choose what they perceive to be the most car for the money.

I don't understand why this is controversial at all. clearly tens of millions want a bigger phone. lots carry around bags anyway so a bigger phone is not a problem. given Apple's design skills, I can see a 4.5+ screen phone not taking up a lot of more real estate. And a bigger phone also allows Apple to add more features and specs. Ask a lot of GS3 purchasres why they got it over an iPhone, screen size is the top answer. Apple should not be losing sales because of this, it should offer 2 iPhone sizes, same as the iPads.
1 Feb, 04:25 PM Reply Like
  • and another thing -- for reasons too obvious to belabor, people are exceedingly unlikely to switch from a bigger phone to a much smaller one. So those sales lost to bigger screensize are not likely to come back no matter how else Apple improves the iPhone.

  • i am from Europe and you are correct, i love my iPhone as a phone and it's fast in giving information, but that information is impossible to read, you have to enlarge the text and if you just slightly touch the screen in the wrong way the message disappears, my friend who owns the Galaxy is far better to read the messages, but the iPhone is faster, but then again if you can't read what yr getting, i must say i prefer still the iPhone to the Samsung, but the trend here is for the Samsung, also the choice in Samsung's offer-list is vast, where as in the iPhone you go from 3 to 4 to 5 to 5's ...it's more an upgrade than something new.
in the States might well be different , but here the Galaxy is immense popular, also the iPhone is being looked by the younger male generation a bit like a Louis Vuitton handbag, it's a fashionable girlie thing, they boys prefer the larger somewhat more masculine looking Samsung.

  • Veruca Salt demands, "Daddy, I want my phablet, and I want it now!"
"But sweetheart that doesn't make sense...," Her father pleads.

Phablets do not make sense. While I have no problem looking up stuff, I understand that the primary purpose of a smartphone isnt browsing. What is does do and what makes sense.

    1. It makes phone calls.
    2. It is a camera
    3. It is a video camera
    4. It is a texting device
    5. It allows you to look up stuff quick.
    6. It is a streaming device that can stream from any radio station in the world.
    7. It is a mp3 player you can take when you work out or go running.
    8. It is an email device.
    9. Acts as a magnifier and light when your son gets something in his foot.
    10. It is a recording device to make voice memos
    11. It is a calendar and travel clock.
    12. Accessing social media especially Twitter but also Facebook.

The iphone may not be an e-book reader or web surfing machine, it does have multiple functions despite its small size. The iphone's size is a benefit because you can answer a text while carrying groceries, or holding onto a bar on a subway, or carrying packages while in line at the post office. The iphone will probably get a larger screen but I hope it doesnt get bigger. I think getting a better voice assistant, SLR quality camera, and improved mp3 functions. I think that Apple can and will do this.

iPads are for reading e-books, interactive textbooks, and recipes. iPads are excellent for watching movies (although you could hook up your iphone to your teevee via netflix) and teevee shows. iPad are great for editing movies and photos and you can create and present Keynote presentations. You can browse websites, blogs, social media, and news. You can shop online, manage accounts and investing, answer email, and use Skype or Facetime to talk to friends and family. iPads are perfect for learning. Schools across the county are using or piloting iPads as instructional tools for kids as Apple has had a very long and extensive relationship with education. iPads can ultimately save money with interactive textbooks which woud be cheaper to keep updated than print. There are countless educational applications that students of all ages can use.

iPads can be used for designers as well and can be great as taking notes, or having teleconferencing.
iPads are for consuming and interacting with a wide amount of content.

I think that there is still a market for computers where you have to work with writing large amounts of material for reports, compiling and analyzing a lot of data, composing long emails or a lots of emails. You really need an attached keyboard as one unit. I like being able to do work on my lap top while talking to video skype, make lengthy replies on social media and certain financial boards, and just pull in work I do on the iPad and iPhone. I love the ability to not worry about a hard disk and put stuff up on the cloud and then pull it down on other devices.

I adore the Macbook Air and think that the design is just sublime. A friend of mine crunches a huge amount of data for research and does real science on hers and I have no doubt that I can accomplish a lot on mine.

I think the analysts and many investors do not understand that Apple is more than individual parts, it has always been envisioned as a holistic self-contained universe where everything is connected and it is all connected with and understanding of the merging of art and technology. Its DNA is encoded with the techwonk of Woz, the marketing and imaginative design of Jobs, with Movies, Music, art, and education.

Apple products are for people who do not time to fiddle with their stuff. They want to create and get stuff done without having to take time to defrag your hard drive, research what virus or trojan horse you got, or fearing the blue screen of death. Apple products are for people who are tired buying products from people who would rather do something else than help you and do not care what your experience is like. Life is too short to fiddle with tech stuff that doesn't matter.

Being able to customize your screens or having additional screen size doesn't make up for the lack of quality.

People are willing to spend more even in an economy that was struggling to get a superior experience and quality products that last and are not subject to the whim of fads or trends. Apple cannot be compared to any other company because it does think differently than any other company.

This is why I buy Apple stock even when the bean counters who have sucked out the soul of companies make their eulogies to Apple. This is why I buy Apple stock despite the nay-sayers. Nay-sayers got to nay-say, so let them.

  • As an example of what I mean, this year we had to go car shopping and we test drove almost every maker. We ultimately bought a Honda, because even though it did not have the latest and greatest bells and whistles, Honda was solid. When you shut the doors you heard and felt quality. Sometimes having more features offers more to go wrong or get old when the novelty wears off. Other car makers would give you deeper discounts, upgrades, and financing, but Honda was just a better investment. Our Honda will last a long time, because we don't turn in a car just so we can get the latest and greatest gadgets.

I feel the same way about Apple products.

  • @ Marinmaven : Madame, everything you write with so much passion for Apple is admirable and makes a lot of sense, until you got to the Honda part, you are willing to buy the best smart phone or tablet available that's Apple, the Rolex in the industry and then you go and buy a Honda for a car that's a notch above a Tata, that's the Swatch in the car industry.and just for yr information the beauty abt the smart phone and tablet industry is exactly the opposite of what you are stating, people change rapidly their phones and tablets, that creates ongoing demand , you don't want these products to last forever, the dump ultimately must be and remain the best outlet.

  • Honda cars are more solid than Toyota, Ford, Hyundai, Chevrolet, Dodge, Kia, Volkswagon, even Suburu.

In your mind the comparable automobile is a BMW or Lexus, or Mercedes Benz. Fair enough.

Hondas are in a different tier than all those other cars except for hyper expensive luxury cars. Honda has a better resale value, they have high customer satisfaction even though they are more expensive than Toyota, Ford, Hyundai, Chevrolet, Dodge, Kia, Volkswagon, even Suburu and offer practically no incentives or cash back or upgrades. Hyundai offered me a deluxe version of their car for the price of a standard one.

You pay more for a Honda because it was a better car. It wasn't the hip car or the ones with the latest bells and whistles. People who own Honda own them for ridiculous long time. My mother-in-law has one from when Bush Sr. was president. We won't have to go car shopping for about 10 years or more.

    So there. ;-)

  • @Marinmaven has obviously never owned a Lexus, @chopchop0.

Everything mechanical that I own from my Lexus ES300 1998 and 2 Mac desktops to my Powerbook is from the late 1990's. I also have a very old Power Mac G4 sliver bullet to retrive back-ups from the '90's and from zips.

They are ALL still working like a charm with little or no maintenance. The only problem with them is they are not software updatable. I might ditch them if the recent software was better from people like Adobe and Deneba (now ACD Systems), but its not.

A timing belt on the Lexus at one point, fresh oil, transmission fluid and tire buys. I did get new brakes and shocks after 14 years. My 2 Hondas never held up that well.

The only thing my Mac's need every decade is a new Sony DVD-RW and a fresh hardrive. I have two networks and run Apple OS9, 10.4.11 AND 10.6. I also have a Dell Optiplex with XP Pro to run some software not available on Macs.

This is what they talk about when companies build really long lasting stuff. People have no need to buy the latest stuff and that eventually erodes corp profits. Oh well...

However, I ditched my iPhone 3 for a Galaxy Note II. Why? It does more stuff on one small device to carry around. I do not need to text while I load groceries into the car or into my apartment or while I drive, although it has a one-handed keyboard. Except when I was in NYC, there is no such sense of immediacy.

  • I personally like American cars because I want to be a patriotic American and they seem to be easier to work on for me. I was a Chevy man and have converted to a Ford man as I have loved my last two Lincolns ('89 Mark VII, '97 Mark VIII).

Every time I talk to a mechanic I as "What's the best car, a Mercedes, BMW?" They always answer Honda/Acura or Toyota/Lexus!

Honda is an excellent car, just too light and fast, which leads to many accidents and deaths!

I read European cars have safer cars, but European cars are harder for me to work on than American or Japanese!

Mercedes and Toyota/Lexus have been the most durable, longest lasting engines/cars in the last several decades or more, but even Toyota got a little careless recently (a rarity for them)!

  • The main issue for all smartphone and tablet makers now that these products have matured, is how large/small to make the screen on the upcoming combo product. The screen has to be small enough for the device to be carried conveniently for men as well as women, but it also has to be large enough to be eye-friendly for hours of online work.

I surmise that the ultimate screen size of that combo " iPhad" will be 7 inches, and if it is not that size it will be a bit larger, perhaps up to 8 inches. Make no mistake, it is coming, and soon.

  • Hopefully APPLE is already working on a Larger Screen IPHONE. It can be done almost as easily as they just came out with an IPAD with more memory. In fact a larger cased IPHONE will be easier to assemble than the IPHONE5. Small and thin, precision manufacturing often costs more to make. Apple should stop Samsung from having an advantage from its larger plastic cased phones, that cost less to make. Perhaps Apple is already having larger screens made for an optional model of the IPHONE5

  • Finally - I really think that a larger screen on the iPhone would improve the user's exerience... Therefore : this improvement MUST be associated with several other improvements as well.
Look at the Blackberry 10 operating system capacity to flop from several applications with the tumb and independant management of user's contents between 'personal' and 'professional' use...Larger case also allows a larger and longer lasting battery... Larger case may also allows a built in retractable device support for Face Time sessions (moving and shaking front camera is a real issue for frequent Face Time or Skype users). Do not remember too : Apple CAN build iPhone cases from the 'Liquid Metal' pattern the company owns and with this feature iPhones will no longer need any kind of protective cases... My opinion : Apple is now able to make a great breakthrough in the smartphone word. But the question remains. Does Apple WANT to be so provocative in the current market? Mr Cook should stop worrying about market share (remember Mr. Steven Jobs) and go straight for radical innovation.
Apple customers expect a unique and great user experience. They are willing to pay a premium for it. Where is the problem Mr Cook?
It would be better for you to connect with your memory and reset some of your most memorable talks with Mr Jobs.
Sincerely - Fuck the market shares and share great innovations with your HISTORIC Apple fans base and then THEY will do for Apple what they always done... Do not expect to expand market share with Android and other open OS bean counters!

Sure there are some people who use it for reading both in USA and outside, but I see enough tablets around that suggest most use those for reading. I do think however, apple would do well to sell a larger screen phone. This iWatch will not cannibalize existing iPhone, but will instead complement it (and therefore increase the sales of iPhone)

Our lives are busy and we have meetings, concerts, practices, kids sports games, and other places where just a note that you are running late, on your way, or reminding someone to pick up milk. While I think that the iwatch is cool, phone calls are waning.

  • iPhone has multitouch screen where you can zoom in. My eyes can no longer focus on their own, but I can look up something quick on the browser of my 4 just fine. I can look up to see what restaurants are around or the closest store. I am not even sure 7 inches is enough for me to read a lot of material. If I want to read a lot of material iPad or MacBook Air is what I prefer.

  • I'm hi class and old school like Warren Buffett, I really have no use for a cell phone, let alone a smart phone! Actually, my trading has gotten worse with the purchase of a computer a year ago**I actually had better trading success phoning(land-line) in my orders...ironic!

I'm about ready to throw my fancy computer in the dumpster as it is becoming an anti-social, addictive device!

  • I'm thinking Apple is giving away an opportunity outside the US without a larger screen iPhone. From their US perspective, skeptics here assume (1) that all iPhone users are male, (2) no male would be caught dead carrying a phone in a bag, and (3) all men have a multitude of screens available, switching to surf on their iPads and screen movies on their 55" TVs. As a Canadian I enjoy similar advantages and love my Apple products, but don't suffer a hangup over shoulder bags.

Dsposable income is much more scarce outside North America; many can only afford one of the above screen options for all of their needs. National Geographic ran a story this month on Afghan mountain sheep farmers who buy smartphones for the apps, games and movies alone, not as a phone as there is no cell signal for hundreds of miles. The price of a phone is one sheep (without the subsidy, an iPhone would likely cost two sheep).

Whether for bling or as a spendthrift decision to get the most for their money - or sheep, outside the US a larger form factor is clearly important. No American male ensconced in his "man-cave" with 3-5 devices is going to make a yak herder in a real cave feel like a sissy over the oversize Samsung phone in his supply bag.

Add to this the female 55% of the population completely ignored in many of these posts who face the same decisions, most of whom carry a bag, and it's easy to see the opportunity cost Apple can no longer afford to ignore.

  • @Marinmaven : Respectfully I cannot agree when you make a comparison between Apple and Honda as examples of top notch brands :-( I am 55 years old and personally owned 2 Hondas (2002,2004), 3 Toyotas (1981,2001,2002), 2 Fords, 4 Volkswagens, 1 Chevrolet, 1 Dodge and many more like Audi, Porsche, Mercedes, Triumph, etc. - but no Kia & Subaru.
Overall, Hondas are may be as reliable as Toyota I may admit but these cars aren't as solid as Toyota cars. With the Civic, the driver's experience is quite poor as a whole, but simply bad in winter (even with the best winter tires)... To be short : Apple as no equivalent these years in the car market. Even deluxe car brands are slightly loosing reliability. This phenomenon is related mostly to the growing presence of electronic equipment (useful or gadgets) offered by car makers in order to seduce buyers. Cheap electronic components are the rule - even with deluxe cars - in order to protect margins and enlarge market shares of companies.
I am an Apple consumer because of the simplicity, the reliability, and the overall quality of their products pipeline. I may suggest to the R&D guys at Apple to study why and how it would be possible to develop a 'kind of' iOS module (central processing unit) for cars as a fix for cheap, unreliable and disseminated electronic car components :-) A partnership with Mercedes or Porsche would be welcomed here. The area of disseminated gadgets will soon be over. The strenght of the iEcosystem will soon improve many new dimensions of the human experience. Wait and see.

  • All I can tell you is based on exhaustive research, countless test drives, and endless spreadsheets of comparisons and price breakdowns as I am absolutely obsessive when I buy anything. As a former Toyota owner, there is a huge difference between them. When I test drove a 2012 Corolla there was absolutely no difference between that and a 2006 and the car looked cheap. I test drove a RAV4 vs. CRV and they were totally different. The RAV4 was poorly designed and drove less solidly than the Honda.

  • Very uninspired with cheapish materials on the inside from what I understand.

I still don't get how it compares to an Apple product

  • i am a little amazed to hear so many of you Americans like Japanese / Korean made cars, to me if you look at "old timer usable " cars than you have in Cuba many American cars from the 50's still going strong and if you go to Eastern Europe , everything is falling apart except for the old Merc's and BMW's from 50 years ago and those are for daily use !

  • If you haved a notebook , which would have a Retina 6x9 widescreen on one side & iPhone 5 turn 1/4 clockwise snapped in from the bottom then pushed down to lock. From that point it will be used as a mouse.
It will have a right & left speaker on the sides of the screen as well as a Camera for being able to FaceTime.
This will allow you to carry the iPhone 5 in your pocket from point A to B that is thin, lightweight and usable with one hand." BUT" when you arrive at the piont you nead a big screen for TV, FaseTime , Pitchers , surfing the web or a iPhase controller.
Don't know how true this is. Apple moved both plugs to the bottom for easy connectability.I would see this format coming in the very near future.Therefour everybody that has a iPhone 5 will automatically have the use of a bigger screen & smaller one to carry around, jest my thoughts.
I have been an Apple enthusiast for 30 years.I've watched them innovate & design ,and saw this coming about 2 phones ago.

  • Of course I'd like to have a iPhone with the size of my Motorola RAZR HD, so I can go through my mail, documents, contacts, photos and videos in a larger fashion. I could have almost everything I need, in my cell phone. Also, it can only be used with my thumb and can easily be carried in my shirt or front trousers pocket.
If you try it, you'd love it.
    Frankating...

  • Apple does make an iPhone w/ a larger screen, it's called an iPad. Who wants to carry a bulky phone around in the office when you can carry a more compact one?

  • Once grandparents get a look at SGN2, they won't return to Apple, since they can actually read what's on the screen without zooming and scrolling. Most won't even need their granny glasses. ;)

  • Before Steve Jobs returned to Apple, they had hugely diverse product lines. One of the things he did was simplify the lines, and this has remained the driving direction since then. That being said, I think it would be fine to have 2 or 3 iPhone sizes. Personally I like the smaller size. It fits in my pocket easier, and is easier to hold. If I am going to do longer term or mobile work I pull out my iPad, and if I really need to get after a document or something I pull out the macbook air. A larger phone would not enhance my workflow.

  • It's only a matter of time (months). Remember when they came out with the Model T, Ford only made 'em on one color and one size. Capitalism demands choice!

  • If I can't see the screen well, one handed or two-handed doesn't matter. From personal experience, my boomer aging eyes need a larger screen. As an iPhone owner from the beginning, am now considering switching for that very reason alone. Perhaps me and 70 million other boomers.

  • Wow- mgww- You have some kind of huge confidence to extrapolate your experience on your iPhone to "perhaps" 70 MILLION OTHER BOOMERS".

  • For Christmas, my 18 year old daughter received an Apple iPhone5 and is somewhat disappointed with it (occasional bad audio, random disconnects, poor 4G), but my 15 year old son received a Samsung Galaxy Note II and he just loves it... especially the big display, stylus, fast 4G. No wonder my AAPL shares are hurting.

  • The Wall St Journal recently had a great article comparing all the latest smart phones, including one of the the new Blackberrys. The iphone looked really dated! A larger screen is an absolute must. Apple's last quarterly report and resulting stock dive should be a wake-up call to mgmt.
