AT&T (T), Verizon (VZ), and other U.S. telcos are on edge over an FCC proposal to free up spectrum for public Wi-Fi networks that could significantly lower mobile data usage. Intel and Qualcomm want the spectrum to be licensed, and Cisco is raising interference concerns - all 3 have an interest in keeping carriers happy. However, Google and Microsoft support the proposal. With carrier data ARPUs surging and voice ARPUs declining, the stakes are high. If the project goes ahead, it could benefit telecom Wi-Fi hardware providers RKUS, ERIC, and ARUN.

  • Yes - service provider Wi-Fi is covered by the lightRadio platform. But it's not a huge part of their business right now.

  • Oh no...who pays the iPhone subsidy in this scenario? Public WiFi networks could bring havoc to the telco business model and to AAPL in particular because their sales model depends on telco-supported hardware discounts.

  • Data is a huge consumer market. Phone and pad consumption of data has huge ARPU potential for wireless carriers and high level of costumer dissatisfaction with wireless coverage. Wireless frequencies and technology has a severe in-building limitations. Wireless carries infrastructure upgrades cannot financially pace the consumer demand. Large public wifi hotspots would allow the wireless carrier to focus on their competitive advantages. Accept that data is a limited market and leverage buy into the wifi market place. Better use of financial resources.

  • Did you mean to say that "data is a limited market"? What are you talking about? If it is limited, we are far from that limit at this point. "Leverage buy into the wifi market place?'...please do go on.
