Monday, February 4, 12:54 PM ETAT&T (T), Verizon (VZ), and other U.S. telcos are on edge over an FCC proposal to free up spectrum for public Wi-Fi networks that could significantly lower mobile data usage. Intel and Qualcomm want the spectrum to be licensed, and Cisco is raising interference concerns - all 3 have an interest in keeping carriers happy. However, Google and Microsoft support the proposal. With carrier data ARPUs surging and voice ARPUs declining, the stakes are high. If the project goes ahead, it could benefit telecom Wi-Fi hardware providers RKUS, ERIC, and ARUN.
