Some Microsoft (MSFT +0.5%) news: 1) Ted Kummert, head of Microsoft's growing Data Platform unit (includes SQL Server and Microsoft's business intelligence/analytics software), is leaving to become a VC. 2) Huawei is teaming with Microsoft to offer a cheap Qualcomm-powered (QCOM) Windows Phone meant for Africa. Offering cheaper Windows Phones is critical to challenging Android's emerging markets dominance - Nokia's (NOK) Lumia 510, perhaps the cheapest WP model currently available, goes for ~$200 unsubsidized.

  • Microsoft teaming with QCOM for to offer a cheaper Qualcomm-powered - Windows Phone makes sense to me. Google and Samsung are not going to like this news. APPL stock is already dead in the "water". I think MSFT has got a "winner" here.

  • Emerging markets seem very much in the company's future. More to come.
