Facebook (FB) roundup: 1) 61% of respondents to a U.S. Pew survey said they had taken a break of at least several weeks from Facebook at some point. 28% said the site is less important to them vs. a year ago, and 12% said it's more important. U.S. Facebook users are much more lucrative than international users. 2) Instagram user photo streams are finally available on PCs. 3) A Wired article looks at how Facebook's control of user data and APIs across mobile platforms could strengthen its monetization efforts, and diminish the value of Apple and Google's platforms.

  • It may be an unlikely match but I could see a very prosperous FB/BBRY collaboration/merger. The leader of networking that is short on tech and the leader of tech who is short of networking.

    Stranger things have happened, no?

  • Looks good to me. (1) We can't expect FB's user base to do nothing except to use FB everyday. Everyone needs a break at some point, which is logical and commonsense. Nobody stays with any single social media all the time but the good thing is that they are still with FB and they come back whenever the need arises. Further, FB is a social media and lifestyles do change, so whether FB is more or less important is highly irrelevant, as they remain as members of FB. (2) Expansion of access to Instagram can only mean good things, which augurs well for FB. (3) Of course, the strength of FB is its strict control of its platform, which enhances user confidence in being protected with FB, so it's good news that FB could "diminish the value of APPL and GOOG platforms". I'm not surprised with this roundup on FB.

  • Seriously, at this point I have no idea why the fixation on the part of so many (pseudo)analysts continues vis-a-vis this lackluster business and company. Time to look for gold in other hills, this company is a flake - flaky ownership structure, leadership, nd business model.

  • I'm working on my 53rd year of "taking a break from Facebook" and, strangely enough, am not missing it at all. :-)

I'd just as soon share my credit card numbers with Dominican hookers as share my personal info with Facebook. The hookers would probably be more trustworthy about protecting the data. (No, this isn't a Senator Menendez post though it might sound like it.)

  • I joined to get back in touch with a friend who's handwritten e-mail address I couldn't decipher, played with it for a couple of weeks, and then took a "break" which threatens to become permanent; you haven't missed anything!

  • Seems like there're lots of people who have a beef with FB. I wonder why? Could anyone care to share their angst with FB? It's OK if anyone doesn't like F but, they don't have to beat down on FB so hard. It suggests that they've suffered damage with FB. Perhaps, FB has done something bad to these people. What do I know? I used to short FB every chance I get but now, I think it's time to go long on FB. Again, I may be totally wrong but only time can tell.
