    The U.S. Postal Service will cut mail service for Saturdays beginning in August in order to save close to $2B annually. The development could provide a minor benefit to FedEx (FDX) and UPS (UPS).

    Everything is choices...a 2/10ths a penny tax on gasoline consumption
    would cover the cost...end sugar subsidies (which actually is 3.5 bill a year) etc etc etc

    Little will helf, when you have 80% labor costs...

    Hear is a plan, 10% postal rate increase, 10% decline in post labor costs. Continue this action until the PO is balanced...

    This is stupid, and will be counterproductive. Saturday mail delivery was one of the few advantages the USPS offered over UPS and FedEx. On a related note, this has got to hurt Netflix, as it signifianctly lowers DVD turnover rates (which lowers the company's costs, yes, but likely has a bigger impact on customer satisfaction).

    I doubt that that will happen... I read somewhere that they actually 'pay' employees to sit around doing nothing rather than lay them off or cut their hours.

    Sell the whole mess to either or both FedEx or UPS and be done with it. The quasi-private/government model never did and never will work.

    I believe Fed Ex delivers saturday but not UPS. IM sure if you paid enough UPS would deliver but for "ordinary" deliverys UPS has never come on a saturday for me where Fed Ex has.

    Both UPS and FedEx provide some Saturday delivery depending upon the parcel service requested.

    They've already replaced a few employees with automated postal machines, which can be used 24/7.

    I have five post offices within five miles of my home. I can think of another great place for the USPS to cut costs.

    Less work product for more cost. Yes, sounds great.

    And, how is it efficient to keep an entire operation going on Saturday just to deliver packages. That's efficient? Hardly.

    Perhaps postal delivery ought to be automated by Goog's driverless cars and as-yet designed postal delivery 'bot. Then I might not regularly get my neighbor's mail.

    actually that is a great idea. there are so many great uses for a self driving car: food delivery, taxi, package delivery, etc. I think they should also stop having bulk mail rates unless they are in cahoots with the trash business and get great kick backs from them to support the bulk rates.

    The USPS model was for use as our nation was developing. We matured to a developed level approximately 100 years ago. As a result, the USPS model is no longer applicable and has been living on life support for decades. The introduction of electronic mail, including for legal documents, has further eroded the viability and need for the USPS. It is time to look at it as the U.S. Cavalry - no longer relevant. Fade it out in the most appropriate way possible, protecting those who have served in the same manner.

    yes USPS was the excuse, the reason was unions and the Democratic party saw no reason to ever complain because they were using other peoples money (tax payer) to run it so poorly.

    The USPS has become a semi-charity welfare organization, a haven for minorities and war veterans, and for those who, could not cut it in the real world, bask in the comforts of socialism protected by the Protector-in-Chief in the WH.

    A bit of irony here, went down to the local USPS with a box that just needed 1 strip of tape to close it... the guy behind the counter said I had to buy a $6 roll of tape off the rack and that the tape he had on the counter couldn't be used for this purpose... so I said fine I'll go to UPS where they tape your box without making pay $6 for a roll of tape you don't need.

    How about those get a free mailing boxes that they have...The one I selected was $11.30, but after getting my own it shipped for $6.10!

    lol yeah it was a pre-paid shipping package too so all i needed was one damn strip of tape and it would be good to go... ended up dropping it off at fedex as the pre-paid slip said either Fedex/UPS or USPS could be used.

    As far as my memory could fetch, back to the days when I was living in Canada, the Canadian Postal Service eliminated its Saturday delivery some 30 years ago!

    In 10-15 years the USPS will be gone. You can pay bills online, magazines are going digital, and packages can be sent UPS and FedEx. There is no longer a need for the Post Office. Their monopoly on letter delivery can be changed as well. They are no longer needed.

    Hah. Give me a break! Or when the USPS loses your bill or check and you get charged late fees.... Or when you are out of town traveling for 2 months and you get home to find you have late fees because someone could not email you a simple bill that you could have paid online.... Or when someone steals your identity through the mail... All banks I have dealt with offer online statements that are downloadable. You are free to download them, print them, etc

    yeah this comment is pretty ignorant... there are so many more benefits to having stuff emailed or stored in the cloud than having the USPS transport it...

    Had to file my taxes late one year because the USPS lost my W-2 form... to bad my company won't email that...
