    Investigators might be getting a step closer to understanding what caused the lithium-ion battery packs to burn out on two Japan Airlines Boeing 787 jets, finding evidence in both cases of short-circuiting and "thermal runaways," when rising heat causes progressively hotter temperatures. MIT professor Donald Sadoway says such an event seems to be inherent in the design, as the batteries are packed next to each other in a metal box without proper venting.

  • Hard to believe that if the problem was so inherent in the design as the Professor says, that 100 engineers who have probably looked at it couldn't figure it out.

  • Agree. But some of these guys from MIT are absolutely brilliant, so I hope the BA engineers find the impact of a redesign based on his observations. Sometimes it takes an outsider to see the big picture
