The demand for electric vehicles in China feels the force of gravity: A deteriorating smog situation in major metro areas such as Beijing has the government testing an incentive program for electric vehicles, although consumers continue to show only a passing interest in hybrids or EVs. Tesla Motors (TSLA +0.5%) will open a retail store in the nation this spring, but may want to wait before it shifts its China plans into second gear.

  • It won't be long before the Chinese government provides very strong incentives for EV's and equally strong penalties for ICEs. ICEs will likely become so expensive that EVs will be the only affordable choice for the masses. So Tesla will be in a very strong postion as all of this unfolds.

  • I still think (TSLA) is a risky bet.

  • Of course it's a risky bet, so is falling in love, getting married, believing in politicians and waking up in the morning. It's the ride that counts. The reality is in the belief. Live long and prosper!

  • Big fan of electrics, but it's more efficient for the chi to focus on the worst offending factories and and more efficient ICE with particle filters

  • The bigger issue is not factories but the number of coal-fired power plants, which continue to grow at an alarming rate. China's the perfect example of what happens when environmental regulations are sacrificed at the alter of growth -- they're slowly killing themselves. Electric cars are one small part of a broad-based policy solution but hardly a panacea. The first challenge for the Chinese is to get off coal. But I won't be holding my breath.

  • Hellz is right, a big part of the China solution lay in the industrial sector. China actually has slightly less electric generating capacity than the US. http://1.usa.gov/XZozYY

The US is largely to blame for China's problem. We outsourced our dirtiest jobs to them (like steel manufacture) and now we say look at how we have improved Gary. Really we just moved our problem to Shanghai.
