Friday, February 22, 6:35 PM ETAmid worries that rising gasoline prices are on the verge of pushing the U.S. into a recession, an MIT study makes the case for even higher taxes at the pump. If the goal is to get Americans to drive less and use more fuel-efficient vehicles, and to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gases, the study says higher gas taxes are at least six times as effective as stricter fuel-economy standards.

Judging by the response of NYTimes readers on Facebook, most do not agree with the scientist. I think the example used of Germany in the Op Ed is just wrong, because it ignores the differences in railroads and public transit in Germany (and many parts of the EU). Outside of a handful of cities, public transit in the US is a joke, and a money loser.
Why to go out for job even, stay at home and order food from restaurants. Government will pay for it. That way, no need to build and maintain road. Also, lesser accidents. Better, everyone become day and lesbian. No need for children. That way less population and lesser burden on government. That a retard administration we have.
up until that point it wasn't too overboard.
Raising taxes on gasoline would have an immense effect on all daily household goods and services, from the so-called 'fuel surcharge' already levied by my lawn mowers, fertilizer feeder, swimming pool cleaners.
Awesome!
Is this a joke! CPI will rocket! And Treasuries crash!
Did it ever cross those MIT'S minds that some CANNOT group hug to their jobs??
Salesman, for one have clients all over..Tell me how they will do this? We do have a ton of groups who cannot do it!!
We already have bus service into the city from where i live, yet the roads ares till pounded with cars. Just look at the Taxi's in the big cities..Maybe we can just stand on the corner with our thumbs out??
Not if you travel with samples !!
Not all the time mind you just for the customers who are regulars and are comfortable with it.
Want new customers? Mine want to try it first!! Also want to meet the salesman, plus i want to see where and how close my competition is as well..
My regulars can get a phone call from me...
Also the world record for best gas milage came out of a TDI Jetta. Over a 9000 mile trip(I am going off memory here) they averaged about 59 mpg.
hey socialist guy, here some more on MIT's guys http://bit.ly/XgRGuS
"During the glory days of the former Soviet Union, where the military would hold a parade each year to celebrate May Day, leading the procession of tanks, missiles, and bazooka-bearing infantry marching proudly toward Red Square was a row of goose-stepping economists. One spectator turned to his companion and asked, “Comrade, why are there economists marching in this military parade?”, to which his friend replied, “Comrade, do you have any idea how much damage they can do?"
A. It would reduce oil consumption and reduce carbon dioxide emissions -- the consensus of scientists is still that CO2 emissions raise global warming
B. It would reduce oil imports -- the latest data (November 2012) show that, in spite of an almost 30% increase in US crude oil production in 2012 versus 2008, the US still imports 44% of its oil consumption needs. Reduced imports means a better trade balance (stronger US$) and less paid to Venezuela and other OPEC nations.
C. It would reduce the US federal deficit, and reduce US debt as a percentage of GDP.
D. It would enable the market to bring about improved transport fuel efficiency standards, instead of getting there by government decree with regard to CAFE.
But, of course, this is too simple a solution for our "stupid" politicians, so it will never get done.
Top academic institute like MIT = maximum narrow-mindedness
When you calm down to think about it, the whole thing about 'Leadership Training' is suspect.
Bunch of crap!
