A change at the top did little to stop the ratings slump at CNN with the network losing 5% M/M and 10% Y/Y of its daytime viewers in February as well as 1% M/M and 18% Y/Y of its primetime viewership. Parent company Time Warner (TWX +1.6%) has increasingly relied on its cable TV business to make up for the flattish growth with its movie studio and struggles at its publishing arm - but for the most part its been HBO, TNT, and TBS doing the heavy lifting instead of CNN.

  • Comedian Lewis Black asserts that we have all have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). Competition for eyeballs has grown faster than the population. Our attention has been fractured beyond repair.
CNN is not much about news anymore. It's about on-air personalities. On New Year's eve, all hard news stopped 5 hours before midnight, eastern time.

  • We have enough idiots in Congress and all around us, no one wants to listen to them on TV anymore.

  • I'm a TWX holder and I was sorry to hear that they hired Jeff Zucker, who I view as someone who was a disaster at NBC, to the point that GE had to figure out how to sell the whole thing off. Zucker could only perform when he was supervised 24/7 by Bob Wright. When Wright retired, the wheels started coming off at NBC. Think back to the 1990s when NBC was Americas Network and a money machine for GE. There was no Fox because NBC was a fair network then. Zucker took it left and they lost their audience and really gave rise to Fox. It was one of the biggest competitive mistakes ever in media. At the end all Zucker could do was arrange for reality shows where someone ate worms or some bs like that---pitiful. The last good job Zucker did was being Katie Couric's gopher on the Today Show.
