Absent the usual last-minute drama and factional disputes, the House yesterday approved a bill to finance federal programs until the end of the fiscal year in September. The vote came well ahead of the deadline of March 27 and averts a government shutdown. The measure, which includes the $85B of sequestration, is due to be voted on in the Senate next week, when it is expected to pass.

  • Let history be your teacher.... not wanting to create a messy situation, this makes sense. They can still come back and cut a comprehensive agreement later.

  • Nah, will never get past the Senate as is. House NEVER sends a clean reasonable bill. They always throw things like immediate Keystone approval in. This one allows targeted, more sane reduction rather than across the board for military sequester cuts, but does not allow that for the other discretionary, and other domestic programs. I.e. all House bills always have red meat in them. Perhaps the Senate-House can reconcile, but who knows. It is just another trick as usual.
