Disney's (DIS) Oz The Great and Powerful scored a $80.28M opening weekend box office (estimated), marking the best weekend debut of any film in 2013. The prequel to Wizard of Oz also played strong to global audiences with a $69.9M weekend take from 46 markets. The bigger issue: The strong weekend is good for the industry as a whole with some concern bubbling up that it was demand factors instead of an array of dull titles behind the slow start to the year.

  • I saw the film at an IMAX theatre, excellent, very enjoyable. Visually stunning, needs a cinema screen and sound to be fully enjoyed.

  • Saw this with a bunch of other adults. General consensus was that it was just OK. The numbers for the weekend seem to portend a positive effect on the stock price though.

  • I agree. Saw the movie this weekend and it's... alright. I think they could have done better, but who knows?

Look for DIS to pop a bit Monday. Disney is still one of my favorite long-term buys even at it's current price.

  • I read on the internet where by the way, everything is true, that the "Wizard of Oz" was about the gold standard and the Federal Reserve. I think I'll pass on this one.
