New York City will become the first metropolis in the U.S. to ban cigarette displays if legislation proposed by Mayor Bloomberg passes. The measure would be a dramatic change from the high-profile positioning of tobacco products near checkout counters at retail outlets and would follow up on other aggressive anti-smoking laws in the Big Apple.

  • When I see so many overweight people on the streets, TV, etc.,It seems that overweight will kill far more people than smoking. Am
not a smoker. Even 15 lbs. overweight leads to early deaths.

  • 15 lbs depends upon your size and other factors, age...
some overweight has yet to be scientifically proven to early deaths -- can you reference a peer reviewed scientific study supporting your opinion?

  • Sex isn't advertised anywhere but, everybody's doing it, especially teenagers. Bloomberg is a nut case. Pot is outlawed entirely and anyone can see how effective that is. Liquor prohibition was tried on a national level with the thought that people would stop drinking. It had just the opposite effect and the gangsters collected the money the government used to get from taxes. The definition of stupid is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. So, by that definition, Bloomberg is stupid.

  • Excuse me. Why is this article written regarding Philip Morris (PM)? PM doesn't sell cigarettes in the U.S. That would be MO. The author should be more careful.

  • Big Brother Bloomberg has your best interests at heart. !!
First Amendment be damned. Anyone in NYC caught talking about cigarettes or tobacco or seen drinking Big Gulps, will be subjected to intensive moral rehabilitation therapy at the City's morality purifying centers.
