VC Mark Suster takes a contrarian stance on Netflix's (NFLX) DVD-streaming split, arguing Reed Hastings made a "great strategic decision." Suster thinks the move will improve Netflix's operational focus, and position it better for a streaming-centric future. Suster also likes Hastings' candor, and willingness to apologize for past missteps. (previously)

  • So if I understand this, the company is too complicated with TWO different businesses and Hastings can't handle the two parts.
Thank goodness he is not CEO of a really diverse company say like PG or the like with many different business units. Time for him to retire to the farm.

  • The complication is due to content owner relationships: Streaming requires them, disc rental doesn't (first sale doctrine).

  • cat, ding! ding! ding! We have a winnah! Only these fools that keep saying its a good move don't understand that the content owners don't want to license anything but back catalog to Netflix. After TV Everywhere using Ultraviolet gets going, they will not need to license any content to Netflix. The movie rental companies have cost the content owners three decades of VHS/DVD/Blu-ray home sales. Those leeches have all gone under except Netflix. Blockbuster has been resurrected by a lucrative pay TV provider so that is a synergistic relationship. That just leaves Netfix which still wants to bust the content owners' chops. Whatta the odds that's gunna go on for long?

  • Netflix is sending about eight movies a month for less than ten dollars. That's eight trips to the mail box that have to be made anyway. Hopefully, we'll run out of moves before the P.O. goes belly up?

  • Cloud computing is the future and I definitely agree that Netflix's focus should be on streaming. However, I don't see any benefit in spinning off the DVD side especially with a stupid hard to market name like Quickster.
