Thursday, October 6, 2011, 1:39 PM ETThe lush 4.60% yield on Series I Savings Bonds is due to be reset in Nov. to a lower rate based on CPI. A combination of near-zero Treasury yields and tepid inflation should keep the new rate attractive: ~3% vs. a 0.02% yield on a 6-month T-Bill. One catch? Millions take the buy-and-hold plan with savings bonds too literally, as close to $16B worth earn no interest because they are past their maturity date.
