IHS estimates U.S. sales of DVD and Blu-Ray titles fell 14% in 1H '11, to $3.96B. Though hopeful 2H sales will be better, the slow adoption of Blu-Ray is proving a handicap for studios such as DIS, TWX, LGF, and MGM, and increasing the appeal of online distributors such as NFLX and AMZN as a way to monetize content.

  • and this is surprising??? Steve Jobs said a long time ago Blu-Ray was a lose, lose proposition... The content people need to find a solution that fits peoples understanding that purchase of product means they own it period... not a right to use in fashion the provider deems appropriate...

Give them a single play option at a low price, and grow the visual appeal from that price... the value will be determined in short order... how many people actually watch a movie more than once?

  • And yet, how many online streaming options offer the quality and extras of Blu-Ray? I definitely don't watch movies more than once (okay, perhaps 0.001% of them)... The combined effect of these two points is that I LOVE Netflix's DVD/Blu-Ray "rental" service (and Coinstar/Redbox ain't bad either), but don't care for streaming at all.

Not to mention that streaming is continuously at risk for bumping into ISP bandwidth caps.

Yes... streaming IS the future. But not for me "now".
