Same Store Sales patterns showed little change in April from the previous 5 months. Higher end retailers continued to perform poorly, apparel chains and department stores showed but few improvements in their sales declines while discount retailers generally maintained positive SSS momentum. Note that Easter was in April this year vs March last year. It is therefore better to consider March and April together to better appreciate the yoy sales trends.
Of note:
Aeropostale SSS bounced back nicely after an apparent pattern-breaking March SSS.
Target continues to perform very poorly among discounters.
Wal-Mart SSS also recovered nicely in April.
BJ’s continues to outperform its peers.

Time for pause. Valuation Risk/Reward now slightly unfavorable. Green shoots not blossoming yet. Many hurdles remain.
