    Thanks for the ideas but concerned about 6.5% bonds that mature in 20 plus years......I would rather buy Preferreds (qualify at lower tax rates on the income), called in 5 years that yield around 7% and slightly under par.

    Long-term bonds are certainly not for everyone. One thing to keep in mind is that the spreads on certain bonds have really widened significantly in recent weeks (in addition to upward rate pressure from benchmark Treasuries). It is quite possible that the spreads for certain companies will eventually narrow again, offsetting further upward movements in benchmark rates.
