  • Dogging The Markets: Week 15 0 comments
    Apr 12, 2013 7:13 PM

What a difference a week makes - anxiety over upcoming earnings reports kept the markets low last week; this week, even so-so earnings are being seen as indications that the market is making a big comeback. Friday ended the week on a downturn; does this bode bad for Monday?

    The Dow:

After last week's dip, both Dogs and Pedigrees are back on track, with the Pedigrees picking up ~ 100 BPS, due - in large part - to Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HPQ) turning in a bad week. The Dogs are far ahead due to HP's phenomenal performance YTD, but on some bad news from IDC (International Data Corporation) concerning PC shipments being down, both HP and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) had their troubles. Whether this hobbles the Dogs for a prolonged period remains to be seen.

    The S&P 500:

Again, both teams made up for last week's poor performance with good gains. Of particular note is that the Dogs have jumped ahead of the S&P and SPY, if only by about 20 BPS. This seems to be due to a particularly strong performance by Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. (NYSE:CLF), which has trimmed its losses by about 1000 BPS. Just as HP has been the drive behind the Dogs of the Dow, Cliffs has been a drag on the Dogs of the S&P; better performance by Cliffs is bound to get this Dog team back on track. Also, Frontier Communications Corp. (NYSE:FTR) has turned things around. This may make for an interesting quarter, at the very least.

    Disclosure: I am long PFE.
