Altisource Portfolio Solutions (ASPS) is my top small cap financial stock pick for January 2010. I have been following and researching ASPS since Douglas A. Kass mentioned the company positively in a Barrons interview several weeks ago. During the last few days of December, Northern Securities and Piper Jaffray became the first two regional firms to initiate coverage with Overweight and Outperform recommendations, respectively. During the last week of December, ASPS traded up on good momentum and higher than normal volume. I agree with Piper that the company could earn over $1.90 a share in 2010. My near term price target is $24.50. ASPS closed at $20.99 at the end of 2009. The company is profitable and has a market cap of over $500M and should gain more investor interest in January as the story on ASPS becomes more widely known.
