As more companies jump on the bandwagon to dump Paula Deen a thought came to mind. What is Sears - SHLD - and J.C.Penney -JCP - possibly thinking? Last Friday I was at a mall and was in both stores.Sears was a ghost town and J.C. Penney looked like a backdrop for a future Zombie movie;that is it was empty and eerie. Those two stores need customers in the worst way in order to have any type of future. They do not need to alienate anyone who might possibly be a Paula Deen fan.Although I am not a fan of hers or of anything she might have said in the past, many are and will boycott these stores because of their stance. It is easy to condemn someone and appeared to be right in the heat of the moment.Another matter entirely when you are running a business that needs customers desperately. At one time these companies could get away with this PR move, but neither Sears,JCP, or Kmart are number one in customer rankings anymore. The escalator continues to move with very few people on it.How long before the store is shuttered and all doors locked? Keeping the scant number of customers you have will enable you to build a base for the future.Remember Martha Stewart, she is in JC Penney stores as I write this instablog.Retail executives have very short memories.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours.
