Barron's: The Hugh Grant Monsanto Interview

|Includes:Monsanto Company (MON)

As the Saturday delivery of Barron's arrived one of the first things that attracted my attention was the CEO Spotlight article. On tap this week is Hugh Grant the 10 year boss of Monsanto - MON - who grew up in Larkhall,Scotland. It is a bit ironic that after all these years of trading stocks I never heard his name mentioned. The company is always mentioned, sometimes controversially, due to their genetically modified seeds they produce. This seed business generates 70% of Monsanto's yearly revenue of$13.5 billion.Despite the controversy,Grant says his mission is to feed a hungry world by increasing crop yields and helping farmers all over the globe.Reading the article you see the perils of leading a public company towards revenue growth while deflecting critics who hate what you are doing. As more people populate this great Earth some sort of balance must be reached in order to feed the over 7 billion people now living. With that number expected to climb to 9.5 billion in 2050 more debate will continue on this matter of how to do that.Whether you are pro or con on GMO foods Monsanto will be a player in this future business of feeding the world.I now know who Hugh Grant is,a gardener who happens to be a CEO with a mission to feed the world. It is a tough job but someone has to do it.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours.
