  • RIMM - Too Little, Too Late 1 comment
    Mar 30, 2012 8:55 AM | about stocks: BBRY
On the wire about Research in Motion (RIMM):
Struggling BlackBerry maker Research in Motion said Thursday that it plans to return its focus to its corporate customers after failing to compete with flashier, consumer-oriented phones such as Apple's iPhone and models that run Google's Android software.

The shift in strategy came with a management shakeup that includes longtime executive Jim Balsillie leaving the board and severing ties with a company he helped build and later see decline.

RIM said it will focus its consumer efforts on targeted offerings that tap the company's strengths. That includes devices that employees will want to buy on their own and bring to the corporate environment. The company was exploring partnerships and other opportunities for consumer products that aren't deemed central. Those products could include software and features that are then incorporated into RIM's own offerings.

"We can't do everything ourselves, but we can do what we're good at," RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said.

Too little, too late. More and more businesses have learned to adapt the iPhone to corporate environments (ie address security issues) and we must understand that corporate users are used to the iPhone and its ease of use. RIMM will soon be patent value. It is unfortunate.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours.

I have to agree, some 6 months ago I wrote a research report on RIMM and my conclusion was that the company was finished and headed for the bone yard, due to its inability to adapt to the market and failure to innovate. In fact any strategic action they take is poorly thought out and too little too late. Yet I was thoroughly lambasted for my conclusion. It is my view that it is too late for the company and that focusing on corporate customers to turn the company around will fail. They have already tried that strategy previously and it failed. On a side note the only country where people still by Blackberrys and where the iPhone is extremely unpopular is Colombia. Blackberry ownership is perceived to be a huge status symbol! But then again I have always argued that my host country is 20 years behind everywhere else! Perhaps RIMM should relocate to Colombia?
