  • Weighing Options On Arena 27 comments
    Jul 14, 2013 1:53 AM | about stocks: ARNA

Readers. I am seriously considering taking all of my Arena (NASDAQ:ARNA) analysis private. Over the past three days some very terrible behaviors of some investors have gone overboard and have begun to impact something far more important than me. I realize that I have some vocal detractors. I also know that there are many, many more of you that appreciate what I do. This issue is more important than any of us.

It may be that the only way to accomplish that more important goal is to remove myself from any spotlight, even if that spotlight is only being shone by a few very vocal people. One or two bad apples can ruin the whole batch. This decision is not about me in the slightest. This is a decision about supporting a much greater cause.

This decision will not be easy. Over the years many of you readers have reached out to me privately offering words of support and encouragement. I feel a responsibility to those readers. I am not saying that this other issue that has come up is more important. It is very important though, and very meaningful to me.

I have some things to consider and think about over the next few days. I may find a way to create a site where members can gain access. It will remove the bad apples from the batch.

There is a lot going on with Arena. There is a lot investors will need to know. I have always tried to look at investments with a critical eye. Good, bad, or ugly I have always separated my personal investment from what I write. Some simply can not appreciate that.

I will weigh my options and let readers know.

    Cheers

    Disclosure: I am long ARNA.

    Spencer,

This is not good news & hopefully you'll reconsider walking away, letting the bullies win. In social media you will always have people that say things they would never say to your face & it's their way of control. It is everywhere.

For me, I would have never known about SA if not for typing my equity name into box, & see various articles pop up. I'm hoping if you leave, you will find a way to make your articles appear among the lists, including "Daily Finance" "Bezinga" "Bloomberg"
"Zacks", etc.."SA" has always ben one of my favorites, thanks to your column! (I never knew about "Investor Village" until the controversy & I can see numerous people complaining about the way it's changed.)

It is convenient for me to click one box, enter equity & see all articles of value appear... Very few dare to write objective/balanced articles of great value, such as yours....Please think long & hard about leaving SA. I hope you reconsider..........

If you do start something elsewhere, hopefully you'll not close the door completely on "SA" & just keep it among your "Sirius Buzz", "I Kick Tires" links

    Best wishes, whatever your choice...

I have a few options I am considering. This would only relate To Arena coverage. It is simpoly a matter of perhaps moving it elsewhere and limiting the coverage to members. That would take it out of search engines, etc., but those that want it would be able to find it.

When I use my search engine it usually brings up the articles for VVUS' Qysmia & Arena's Belviq. Usually, if Qysmia is mentioned within the article, it would come up in search, even though it's on ARNA. If Qysmia talk is totaly eliminated yes, that probably would weed any VVUS folks out.(Those willing feel the rath for defending Qysmia/VVUS, would be able to find it. )

Will you be ending all articles on Qysmia/VVUS?

Thanks for all the great articles & hope you'll still report on both

You know the other side will want get in on the continued rivalry one way or another & try to stir the pot...(Especially if their equity is being slammed by commentors)...I'm guilty, sometimes...

Don't do it Spencer. You'll only encourage more bullies to try to push more authors they don't agree with off sites like this. Perhaps writing fewer articles would help, or take a small break from writing? Or write more instablogs than full articles - they don't get picked up by Yahoo Headlines etc - so you could still communicate with those who follow you while avoiding the easy access by the bozos?

This is a bigger issue than me. This relates to these bullies trying to bully someone they have no business bullying. The sad thing is that they are putting their investment ahead of what this person is trying to do. I will not stand for it. I want this person to have success and if that means I shift my own strategy so be it. I will let KARMA deal with these low life people

I agree on the encouraging bullies part...It would be same thing in two different places, unless, totally ends any report on Qysmia/VVUS & that is part of news, as will be Contrave, etc..

Spencer, as you know I appreciate your work and articles. Let me say this though, I worked in a very ruff environment many years and found that at times you just have to pull up your pants and stand the fight of personal attacks!

It is now time for you to (excuse the expression) quit whining and get over it! Do not let these Trolls win by running you out of town on a “comment-rail” and poking a stick at you. If you do, you allow them the power and self-pride to do this to other authors at their whim. Remember these are just fools with a keyboard and probably no life outside of their computer!

Do not allow these Troll’s the privilege of a reply from you directly nor the gratification of getting to you! Troll’s live under a bridge of crap so leave them there to soak in their own stink.

I don’t mean this to sound harsh toward you, you do what is best for Spencer, but it is time to pull up your big-boy pants and make a stand, not retreat

Good luck to you whatever your decision.

If it were just me, this would not be an issue at all. What is happening is that people that purport to be long, and are ardent supporters of Arena are projecting themselves onto someone that is not even invested into the equity, and further, spamming that person with all kinds of innuendo (unsubstantiated and conspiracy theory like claims against me) and trying to control how this person tells her own story. She is not invested in the equity, has a terrific story to tell, and is finding herself caught in a whilrwind of things that she really does not care about. Not only are these people spamming her, they are sending off "concerned" emails to Arena and Eisai because I am the one covering the story.

These people like her story, but are so caught up in their investment that they do not realize they are ruining it. It is HER story, not theirs. and certainly not mine. I want this person to have every shot at taking her story further.

Spencer if you are referring to Ellie then perhaps she needs to make the decision as too whether or not utilize public media.

Everyone is not cut out for the use of public media and perhaps some should turn off this wonderful, amazing machine called the computer! As they say “if ya can’t stand the heat, don’t stand next to the fire whether your cold or not.”

Just like children posting their lives on the computer for everyone to read about, then being picked on and bullied by a few kids and doing something drastic. What ever happened to common sense privacy, you know keeping your mouth shut about personal matters.
Maybe I am old fashion and am not saying who should or shouldn’t use social media, but common sense goes a long way. What you say can and will be exploited, and you are tying your own noose when you “post” something no matter what your meaning or intent.
I always recommend to younger people to “Step away from the computer” “Get a life” and “Find a real hobby”. Should that hobby be writing fine, get some “paper & pen” and write.

Guess the point here is to be more Life-active, not Computer-active. I strongly suggest volunteering in the community homeless shelter, there many things to do other than sit with a piece of plastic!

Speaking of which, I’m due there now so have a great day and just make "your life" happy!

I don't know who hosts Ellie's blog or how she receives email for it (surf it's email and not comments to the blog?), but it's relatively easy for her to block objectionable people from accessing her host's server and/or blog, VERY easy to block email by herself....spam type stuff especially....with a little help from a computer literate person following her blog she could wipe out all of the nasty stuff entirely.

Day Trader has a good point - the moment she decided to go public with her story she *became* a story - perhaps she didn't realize what the would entail - but if she can't take the heat perhaps she should get out of the kitchen. Sux, but that's the way the net works, ya know? It's all not cute kitten videos.....

Author’s reply » It is not so much the heat from the everyday haters that will exist no matter what. It is the "heat" from over zealous and over-passionate longs (the Reza types and his peers) that are trying to control her journey and what she does. i.e. "don't insinuate that Belviq is expensive because that will be bad for the stock" or "make sure you mention that it helps with diabetes" or "don't overplay this or that aspect of what you are doing because people may say that it is something other than the drug that is making you lose weight"

Essentially she is being spammed by investors that do not really care about her, but rather the impressions she gives in terms of Arena for investors.

Sounds like she's realized what she got into and has her head on straight now:

"I got a little frustrated this weekend and almost deleted my blog with all the drama, but I chose to just get over it and move on. I have to remind everyone, I am in this for ME. I want to lose weight for myself."

Still think someone ought to offer her help in filtering the comments section under each post by IP address or device name (unique to every single device that exists, like the Iphone UDID) to block the bozo brigade - not really that difficult to do - several online services I use track by device name, not IP or cookies. Yeah, there are ways around some of those blocking services if one knows how to do it, but it will at least make it difficult enough that most of the offenders will give up trying.

I wouldn't believe those horrible way OT statements you quoted were real if I weren't familiar with the ill-mannered behavior of who is probably the biggest jerk of them all.

    Healthy,
I chuckled when I read your “bit of wisdom” comment :) I call it a lot of bumps and bruises from life! I liked your 5-tips, good advice.

    Spencer,
You can tell her if she wants to test the “waters of negativity” be a volunteer advocate for a homeless shelter like I do. When I post anything regarding helping the homeless in your community I get slammed like a dog, and the people on S/A are especially ruthless.
That is ok, it simply gives me fuel for the fire to do what I believe in and what is important to me, helping people in bad situations. I do not solicit for cash, I solicit for items, socks, toiletries, underwear and so on. I get told to take a hike more than not, but it means I am being effective one way or the other. Anyone can donate items to their community shelters, everyone has one and they all need help “all the time!”

So you just tell this lady she’s not alone taking bumps & bruises and keep that in mind yourself! Do what is important to you, and what you believe in! Screw the rest!!

Yes, it's tough out there w/social media & some folks seem to get nastier all the time...

    Healthy,

That is awesome, your community service is to be commended!
We do the non-profits that serve directly to the people, not all do like Goodwill. They are surprisingly profit orientated, but have good programs.

Horizon House Indianapolis is a family day shelter, and the Dove center is a women’s center. Both help get people off the streets and back into society. Look for centers that “empower” not simply “enable” in my opinion they do very productive work.
FYI; My wife coupons and gets hundreds of toiletry items free toothpaste & brush’s, deodorant, shampoo, etc. It is amazing and put into direct use.

Keep up the good work you are valuable in the community!

    Hey Spencer,

Yes, Goodwill is more profit oriented, but we donate there when Salvation Army won't take it, like printers

    Spencer,

Don't be crazy, are you kidding me? I Google all the arena news and your articles pop up, this is a very good thing! I have learned a ton about ARNA and VVUS through your blogs/articles (nowhere else to be found) that I use in making investment decisions with real money!! I find your writings very credible and I think you should be flattered that you have so many attacks. The truth sometimes hurts and it becomes a magnet for bad apples.

You would be doing a great disservice if you stop the ARNA articles on this site. If I'm on your list of bad apples, please let me know & I will gladly stop commenting on your articles, but still read them, in order for you to continue the great work that you do. I think some do not appreciate how much detail and homework some of you articles and comments involve. Not to mention the timing of your articles in relation to the actual news, this takes dedication. Please continue your work my friend!!
