Thoughtful bear. Believer in the Detroit revival. I have been investing in publicly traded equities for nearly a decade, and I have worked in the investment field for many of those years. I've run small businesses, and I also invest in private companies and real estate. Twitter: @Detroit_Bear... More

While prepping an article about an urban retailer "highly dependent on African Americans," I came across the unemployment rate difference between whites and blacks.

The result: 5.7% unemployment amongst whites versus 12.1% unemployment amongst blacks.

Even worse, only 60.5% of blacks are participating in the workforce compared to 63.5% of whites. This is a major issue that must be addressed.

Thank you for bringing attention to the gap in unemployment between whites and African Americans. It's clear that the unemployment rate is quite overstated as I have pointed out in many of my comments and past articles on Seeking Alpha and otherwise. This labor market is clearly not up to par as the unemployment rate is falling for the wrong reasons.

Detroit Bear....that is a black bear in your avatar, right? Any meaning other than it is a bear? (grin)

Reason I can be forward.....I am a 73 year old white guy. But I have a 40 year old African American adoption. Not only was she black in Prince George County Maryland in 1969...she had Cerebral Palsy. Two strikes. Hard child to place, even in an African American family.

Long story short....about time we got over color and into the heart of humanity. But the color issue seems to drag on forever. Not fair. Not by any spiritual standard I know.

Just want you to know I care. Even if no one else does.

One more thing...Polar bear to Black bear....the dad's have to step up. That big discrepancy in unemployment is caused in part by the lack of leadership a father can provide. No dad around puts it all on the mom. Or grandmom. And it is a vicious cycle...

....all just the opinion of a friendly bear....grin

    Peace bro....

Author’s reply » Thanks for the comments Perkins. While I'm not black, I'd like to consider myself a citizen of humanity. We don't spend enough energy caring about our fellow bears (humans) due to myriad reasons. Life isn't fair, but everyone deserves an equal shot until age 18--sadly many in the United States are not given this opportunity, but even more disturbing, few people care about that simple fact.

You're right on about the lack of father - I grew up without one, and let me tell you about all the problems it caused me. Particularly with male authority figures.

There are so many issues that must be dealt with, and it starts with the bears caring.
