BioSolar develops technology designed to produce bio-based materials from renewable plant sources that reduce the cost of photovoltaic (PV) solar modules. The company today announced it has received approval for its application for USDA’s BioPreferred Product Label.

The BioPreferred program has two major initiatives: certification and designation.

USDA certifies and awards labels to products that meet the minimum certified bio-percentage of 45 percent out of a maximum of 95 percent. This is to drive increased consumer recognition of biobased products.

USDA also designates categories of biobased products in relation to what Federal agencies look for when making purchasing decisions.

The purpose of the USDA BioPreferred program is to promote the purchase of biobased products, with an end goal of reducing petroleum consumption, increasing the use of renewable resources, better management of the carbon cycle, and reducing adverse environmental and health risks in general. The program was also designed in hopes of driving economic development, creating new jobs and new markets for farm commodities.

“This is a very significant development for BioSolar. USDA’s BioPreferred certification will be particularly important for our intended sales to government entities,” Dr. David Lee, BioSolar’s CEO stated in the press release.

In order to get the BioPreferred certification from the USDA, the company’s BioBacksheet was analyzed by the only USDA-authorized testing company, Beta Analytical Inc., which tested the BioBacksheet for renewable content of a material.
