Speedemissions is one of the largest test-only emissions testing and safety inspection companies in the United States. The company's primary objective is to become the leading vehicle emissions (and safety inspection, where applicable) testing company in those states where emissions testing is mandated by the 1970 Clean Air Act.

To reduce and control air pollution, the Clean Air Act requires that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) establish national ambient air quality standards and that the states develop strategies for reaching and maintaining these standards. Consequently, by the request of President Obama, the EPA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are taking coordinated steps to enable the production of a new generation of clean vehicles, through reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improved fuel use from on-road vehicles and engines, from the smallest cars to the largest trucks.

SPMI's business is to conduct the vehicle emission/safety inspection tests for automobiles, vans, sport-utility-vehicles, or pick-up trucks. They currently own and operate vehicle emission/safety inspection testing stations in Georgia, Texas, Missouri, and Utah, and also do vehicle repair through their SpeedEmissions Car Care stores in the above states.

There are a number of concerns with vehicle emissions besides their greenhouse gas and global warming effect. In densely populated areas, the high concentration of emissions presents a direct health risk to humans. That's why Speedemissions uses state-approved computerized emissions testing and safety inspections equipment that test vehicles for compliance with vehicle emissions and safety standards.

On January 7, 2014 the Company announced that while its corporate name will remain the same, it will begin operating its stores under two new brands, "Expresso Emissions" and "Expresso Car Care Café." Expresso Emissions stores will continue to provide vehicle emission testing and/or safety inspections in those markets where it is required, as well as selling light bulbs, wipers and headlight restoration services. The Expresso Car Café facilities will handle the same services, plu semission repair, diagnostics, engine tune-up, brake repair, radiator & air conditioning flushes, oil changes, and more.
