  • Change Is Speeing Up. Put It In Perspective. 0 comments
    Jun 8, 2012 7:48 AM

We will see more technological progress in the next 25 years than we did in the last 100 years.

    Think about

it. Look around you. Long-standing businesses are being threatened every day by the disruption of technology. Look at what Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) has done in 10 years. Look how much faster they scaled than did Google (NASDAQ:GOOG). Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) completely disrupted markets and boomed. The ability for businesses to reach massive audiences and rapidly scale has never been greater. It is only going to get faster. These time frames are sometimes hard to grasp.

Here is a great thought experiment to put all of this change in perspective.

Carl Sagan's cosmic calendar can be used. Imagine that you could compress the entire history of the universe into one year. The Big Bang happens a few seconds in on January 1st and everything in known history happens up to midnight on December 31st.

Using this scale of time, not much happens in the first eight months. The sun would form in August. The first multicellular organisms in November. The Cambrian explosion would happen on December 15th and Dinosaurs would appear on Christmas Eve. At 10:15 AM on December 31st apes would appear. Humans would walk upright at 9:24 PM. Civilization appears 20 seconds before midnight. Writing would be invented 15 seconds ago. The Egyptian pyramids invented a mere 10 second ago. Rome would fall at 11:59:57 PM. The Internet invented not even a nanosecond ago.

Whew! Hold on tight and keep a nimble approach to investing. Such rapid change and innovation leads to massive new wealth creation. Great opportunities will flourish. Just be careful not to hold on to dearly to the companies and stocks that cannot keep up.

Hope this helps sharpen your thinking in the stock market game.
