Electric Cars' roll out in a mass market fashion used to be at the mercy of Oil prices, government incentives and consumer devotion to pay the top buck for being Green. This situation can be changing right now by start up from Germany and its wonder Lithium battery.
News about DBM Energy and its technological break through in Lithium batteries technology made its way, finally, into the sale pitches of stock promoters. We do not endorse the company mentioned in that report in any way - you know what we like here on this blog already - but this article is an important indication that this technology news are filtering through.
DBM Energy is not in a hurry to tell its story to the English speaking world and was surrounded by a lot of rumors from the very beginning. We are still awaiting for more clear confirmation on cost and pricing for the battery, but it is already evident that this technology is nothing less than the potential game changer in the electric space.
Recently it was reported that auto industry heavy hitters have joined the DBM Energy board and we are awaiting the further developments with this company.Evuk.co.uk has reported that former execs from BMW and Daimler Benz have joined the board of DBM Energy and its founder "Mirko Hannemann has such confidence in his idea that he turned down an offer of over 600 million Euros from Samsung":
"DBM Energy: KOLIBRI Lithium Batteries Passes Safety Tests. New Independent Range Test Confirms 455 km On One Charge! We have the breaking news from Germany and DBM Energy. Information is very scarce at best and only in German so far. Revelations from this hidden in the heart of Germany company are groundbreaking: KOLIBRI Lithium Metal Polymer Batteries (Lithium-Polymer-based technology) have passed extensive independent safety tests and demonstrated endurance of 5000 charging cycles. As you may know, President Obama announced that he wants one million electric vehicles (EVs) on the road by 2015. But thanks to tepid EV sales from the industry’s leaders – General Motors (NYSE: GM) and Nissan (TYO: 7201) – not everyone’s convinced it can happen.
As The New American reports, “Throughout July, a whopping 125 Chevy Volts were sold, making the seemingly low 281 units sold in February a groundbreaking month.”
And with sales stagnating, Reuters expects that only 667,000 units will be sold by the 2015 deadline. Sorry, Mr. President!
The problem is, most consumers can’t get over EV sticker shock.
It’s tough to blame them, too. The Volt starts at $40,280… the Nissan LEAF goes for $35,200… and Tesla Motors’ (Nasdaq: TSLA) upcoming Model S sells for $57,400.
Like The New American adds, at these prices, “car shoppers would actually save money purchasing a Mercedes-Benz C350 over a Chevy Volt.”
Luckily for EV manufacturers, though, one German company’s new technology should boost sales by cutting thousands off the steep price tags.
Here’s how…
The “Holy Grail” Of Cutting EV Costs
You see, the biggest culprit behind inflated EV prices is the battery. It adds $10,000 or so to an EVs manufacturers suggested retail price (MSRP).
What’s worse, owners need to replace the lithium-ion battery every 10 years. So the cost of ownership is a huge deterrent.
But DBM Energy’s new advanced battery – Kolibri – is constructed with a special lithium metal polymer. Early reports suggest this battery will cost 89% less than existing batteries and will only need to be replaced approximately every 20 years.
Plus, it trounces existing batteries in three other important ways…
~ Weight: A Kolibri is reportedly 29% lighter than the battery pack in a Tesla Roadster.
~ Efficiency: A Kolibri has enough power to keep an Audi (ETR: NSU) A2 cruising for an astonishing 400 miles on a single charge.
~ Charging: You can fully charge a Kolibri battery in just six minutes. The Leaf takes closer to six hours.
The potential for this new technology seems very promising and the company’s already in talks with major automakers worldwide. It foresees a mainstream rollout of its superior Kolibri battery not too far off.
Once this happens, it’s reasonable to assume that you’ll be able to buy a Nissan LEAF for around $26,300. Or $18,800 after factoring in the government tax credit. And since Toyota’s (NYSE: TM) bestselling Prius retails for $23,810, I’m convinced this new battery will ramp up EV adoption considerably.
So whether or not we reach the President’s EV goal by 2015, the market clearly has potential to catapult higher in the coming months and years. And any innovator in the space with the technology to make the transition easier on our wallets is certainly worthy of your attention.

Too good to be true I'm afraid. There is no way to charge a 63 kWh battery in 6 minutes without a 630,000 watt power source! A standard US wall outlet can only deliver a maximum of 1,800 watts. The maximum power from even a 220V, 30 Amp, electric clothes dryer outlet is only 6,600 watts.
I don't see how it is possible to fully charge the battery in six minutes without a very high power (i.e. high voltage, current or both) electric source. This leads me to the conclusion that the whole story is likely made up.
This story is not as straight forward as we would like to see it as well. This particular claim about charging time is published only in this article - it can be achieved, maybe, only in the lab conditions. But we have not seen it in other DBM Energy press. All other claims were confirmed by the German ministries and published on their websites?!

why are the naysayers refering only to home charging? Do you fill your ice vehicle at home? no? where then...a gas station.....well with the range claimed then why not charge at an electric station? duh.,,..,.,.,ya i know....who wants to wait 6 minutes to charge? ever time how long it takes to fill a 20 gallon tank? Is 6 minutes really that much different?
