Gardner Denver (NYSE: GDI), the maker of screw, vane and reciprocating compressors for the food, energy and chemical industries, announced it will start paying a quarterly dividend. The company will pay 5 cents a share beginning in the current quarter. The new dividend is payable on December 10 to shareholders of record on November 23.

While an annual dividend of 20 cents isn't going to get you into a Ferrari, it is usually a good sign to see a company that hasn't previously paid a regular dividend start doing so. Hopefully, this is a start of trend. Gardner Denver shares are up nearly 87% year-to-date and the company had more than $71 million in free cash at the end of 2008.
