  • Lawsuit Asks Court To Stop GM Crops, Pesticide Use In Wildlife Refuges 0 comments
    Jun 5, 2014 11:15 AM | about stocks: PSHR

The Center for Food Safety (CFS) filed a lawsuit against the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) for allowing chemical companies to poison wildlife refuges through planting of genetically modified (NYSE:GM) crops and harmful pesticides, the Nature News reported.

Joining CFS in the lawsuit are the Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER), the Center for Biological Diversity (NYSE:CBD), and Beyond Pesticides. The three groups blamed FWS for neglect in performing its job as prescribed by law. FWS, they said, failed to protect wildlife from the chemical and biotechnology industries.

The lawsuit is asking the court to ban the planting of GM crops and spraying of bee pesticides in all wildlife refuges across the country.

Andrew Kimbrell, Executive Director of CFS stated in the Nature Daily's report, "National Wildlife Refuges are vital sanctuaries of our national heritage, for present and future generations, allowing chemical companies to profit by poisoning these important ecosystems violates their fundamental purpose and mission."

The U.S. government has allowed the planting of GM crops and the spraying of neonicotinoid pesticides- a bee killing chemical in all National Wildlife Refuge. The lawsuit challenged this government move, arguing that it has potential harmful effects to the wildlife at the refuges. The groups' added wetlands are supposed to be protected and not covered by GM crops.

The groups stated the refuges were supposedly created to protect wildlife from human intervention and using toxic bee-killing pesticides will put the insect at risk of extinction. Many crops rely on pollination to grow, if the entire bee population is wiped out due to deadly pesticides, there is a real danger of food shortage.

Toxic poisons from pesticides are not only harmful to crops and animals, it can also cause adverse effects on human because it is basically made to kill living organisms.

According to Beyond Pesticides, there are several diseases that are connected to pesticide exposure like asthma, autism, learning disabilities, birth defects, reproductive dysfunction, diabetes, certain type of cancer and Parkinson and Alzheimer's diseases. There have been several efforts to limit and eventually stop the use of hazardous pesticides and instead promote non-toxic alternative practices and products.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said that biologically based pesticides are becoming popular and are safer than the traditional chemical pesticides. Reduced-risks conventional pesticides in the market are also increasing.

Nature-Cide is one of the non-toxic products available in the market. It is a 100 percent natural and effective in killing insects while repelling rodents and reptiles. Nature-Cide's line of insecticide/pesticide and repellent products do not contain harsh chemicals and they are proven to be a safe way to rid your home of all types of pests such as ants, wasps, bed-bugs, cockroaches, mosquitoes, fleas and ticks. It is also effective in getting rid of reptiles and rodents.Nature-Cide uses minimum risk essential oil ingredients such as Cedar oil, Clove oil, Cottonseed oil and Cinnamon oil. They are children and pet-friendly, an alternative to poisonous pesticides that can harm the environment as well.

Harsh chemicals in pesticides are pollutants that contribute to the degradation of the environment. Consumers are now more aware of the environmental effects of chemicals from the use of pesticides. An example of the dangerous effect of chemicals in the environment was the heavy use of DDT to combat malaria in the 1950's to 1970's.

Public concerns about the widespread use of DDT, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, begun in the 1960's. Rachel Carson, author of Silent Spring published in 1962, raised issues on the use of DDT, she said that although DDT is an effective insecticide, it caused the death of various plants and animals .DDT where found to cause poisonous effects on birds and fish. DDT causes the thinning of eggshells in birds threatening its population. No longer manufactured since 1972, this chemical is said to be still used in India.

DDT's environmental problems have been proven on birds and fish, but the effects on human are still subject of ongoing studies and research.

According to a 2007 study published in the Environmental Health Perspectives journal said prolonged exposure to high levels of DDT increases risk of developing breast cancer. Another study in the same journal, published in 2002 said that it raises the risk of liver, pancreas and breast cancer and might cause premature births and low birth weights.

Nature-Cide pesticides are a non-staining, aromatic chemical and DEET (Diethyl-meta-toluamide) -free. It is also safe to use in most surfaces unlike other chemical insecticide products. It sells indoor and outdoor pesticides, favorite among gardeners because it is safe on fruits and plants. It has been proven to kill and repel various pests and environmentally-safe.

Nature-Cide is a division of Pacific Shore Holdings Inc. (PSHR ) which specializes in the manufacture of consumer packaged goods.
