A wide number of factors increase your susceptibility to insect bites. It could be your blood type (yes, people with O blood type are more attractive to insects, particularly to mosquitoes, according to this study), your body temperature, or the condition of the environment you are in. So how do you prevent them from happening again?

Before you reach for the pest repellent stored in your closet, consider using natural pesticides. As many studies suggest, chemical pesticidespose a number of health risks to you and your family. Chronic health problems and certain forms of cancers such as Hodgkin's Lymphona, brain, ovarian and breast cancerare just one of the many risk factors involved in chemical pesticide use, according to the Toxics Action Center.

Here are some natural repellents that can help you ward off pests naturally:

    Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous earth comes in a form of wettable powder or dust. According to the National Pesticide Information Center, diatomaceous earth is made from the fossils of sea creatures called diatoms, a group of algae or phytoplankton. Diatomaceous earth is recognized by the FDA for use in food products and as an insect repellent in itself. When used as a repellent, diatomaceous earth dries out the insect's exoskeleton of oils and fats upon contact, causing the insect to die. Diatomaceous earth particles feel like tiny daggers to insects' body, wounding them and speeding up their death.

    Citronella Oil

Citronella oil is extracted from two grass varieties. Its active compounds-citronellol, citronellal, and geraniol-are responsible for warding off insects and pests. Citronella isa main component of a number of registered insect repellents in the market. It can be added into a wide variety of items such as sprays, lotions, candles, and even wrist bands to effectively ward off pests. It works by driving away pests instead of killing them. Citronella basically masks the smell of food sources or placesthat insects love.

    Heat

Bugs die at a body temperature of 45 degrees Celsius so to kill it with heat, you have to make sure that the location or object where the bed bugs must be hiding is heated to a higher temperature, advises the Environmental Protection Agency. To do the job, special thermal equipment is needed. Heat-drying your upholsteries, bed sheets or clothing could help kill bed bugs. Hampers and laundry containers should also be cleaned as bed bugs and their eggs may be hidden in them.

When push comes to shove, you can always rely on an all-natural pesticide formulation like Nature-Cide, which makes use of essential oils to effectively get rid of pests. Nature-Cide's various formulations (i.e. Bed Bug, Outdoor, Flea & Tick, and Indoor) are based on a powerful combination of essential oils namely cedar oil, cinnamon oil, clove oil and cottonseed oil. Nature-Cide's formulations work by causing insects to prematurely shed their exoskeletons, effectively killing them. See how it works for you and watch this YouTube video.

With the use of chemical repellents becoming more of a health concern, one is better off using natural pesticides to keep pests at bay. It is definitely safer, especially if you have kids around and to ensure your health is not compromised. After all, you do not need to deal with another problem.
