NASA And Bigelow Aerospace in the NY Times 0 comments

On May 27th I wrote an article about NASA going public which shed light on the subject in an imaginative and somewhat comedic way. Upon review of the New York Times this week, I found an article concerning the entrepreneurial path that NASA will be taking soon in response to the big scissor approaching the government’s umbilical cord. Kenneth Chang writes from the Bigelow Aerospace factory, where he interviews owner and entrepreneur Robert T. Bigelow about his company and the new mindset of space exploration.
The factory produces white, watermelon shaped pods that are inflatable in space, allowing for spacious living in the great beyond. Up to 36 people can live in the two pre-made living stations. Space exploration’s new business model will inspire private companies to build machinery for space, which will be manned and operated by trained NASA astronauts. Bigelow Aerospace plans to lease its units to those willing to make a 4 year commitment and fork over $395 million annually. Mr. Bigelow has already invested $180 million of his own money into this program and says he is willing to invest up to another $320 million more. Currently there are no other competitors in the industry, for now. Bigelow Aerospace is also collaborating with Lockheed Martin and Boeing on other space projects, a trend that is sure to grow in the future.
This new business model will allow for the entrepreneurial spirit to reach space, faster budgeting and independent decision making will aid companies to make advanced technology and produce revenue, while still remaining safe by sending trained NASA personnel to space. Other advantages include the sharing of technologies to other countries. Whoever has the money, can now go to space by buying seats on these flights and going through the correct training. Allied countries, sharing information can lead to bigger and better projects.
